Shopify Fees Calculator
Pick your plan and country to see what Shopify Payments actually takes from each order, what that adds up to monthly, and your effective fee rate once the subscription is counted.
Fees per order
$2.04
You pay $2.04 per order, an effective 3.40%. Across 500 orders that is $1,059 a month including your plan.
- Effective fee rate
- 3.40%
- Total per monthProcessing plus your plan subscription.
- $1,059
- All-in cost of ShopifyProcessing and subscription as a share of revenue.
- 3.53%
- Processing per month
- $1,020
- Plan subscription
- $39
Shopify Analytics excludes these fees. StoreProfit doesn't - it takes the real fee from every payout and puts it against the order that caused it.

How this is calculated
Fee per order = Order value x Card rate + Fixed feeTotal per month = Fee per order x Orders + Plan subscriptionEffective fee rate = Fee per order / Order value x 100All-in cost = Total per month / (Order value x Orders) x 100- Card rate
- The percentage Shopify Payments takes, set by your plan and country. It falls as you move up plans and rises for international cards.
- Fixed fee
- A flat amount charged on every transaction regardless of order size, typically 30 cents or 25 pence. This is the part that quietly punishes low order values.
- Effective fee rate
- What you actually pay as a percentage of the order, percentage and fixed fee combined. Always higher than the headline rate.
- All-in cost
- Processing plus the monthly subscription, as a share of revenue. The number to use when comparing plans, because a cheaper card rate on a dearer plan is not automatically better.
Worked example
A US store on Basic takes 500 orders a month at a $60 average order value, all on domestic cards:
| Card rate (US, Basic) | 2.9% + $0.30 | |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage part | $1.74 | $60.00 x 0.029 |
| Fixed part | $0.30 | |
| Fee per order | $2.04 | |
| Effective fee rate | 3.40% | $2.04 / $60.00 |
| Processing per month | $1,020 | $2.04 x 500 |
| Plan subscription | $39 | |
| Total per month | $1,059 | |
| All-in cost of Shopify | 3.53% | $1,059 / $30,000 of revenue |
The headline rate is 2.9%, the real cost is 3.53% of revenue. On $360,000 of annual sales that is $12,708 - roughly a full-time month of someone's salary, and none of it appears as a cost in Shopify Analytics.
The fixed fee is the part that hurts
Everyone compares the percentage. Almost nobody looks at the flat per-transaction fee, and on low order values it dominates. At a $60 order, the 30 cent fee is 15% of what you pay Shopify. At a $12 order it is 56% of it, and your effective rate is 5.4% rather than the 2.9% on the pricing page.
This has a direct operational consequence: raising average order value cuts your payment costs faster than upgrading plan does. Moving a $12 AOV store to $24 through bundling halves the fixed-fee drag on every order, permanently, and costs nothing per month. Going from Basic to Grow to chase a 0.2% rate cut on the same $12 orders costs $66 a month and barely moves the effective rate.
When upgrading plan actually pays for itself
The break-even is straightforward: the plan upgrade pays for itself when the rate saving across your monthly volume exceeds the extra subscription. In the US, Basic to Grow costs $66 more a month and saves 0.2% of processed volume, so it breaks even at $33,000 of monthly revenue. Grow to Advanced costs $294 more and saves another 0.2%, breaking even at $147,000 a month.
Run your own numbers above rather than trusting those thresholds, because they change entirely by country. In Australia the Basic to Grow saving is 0.15% against a $93 price difference; in the UK it is 0.3% against £40. The shape of the decision is the same everywhere but the crossover point is not.
The costs this does not include
This calculator covers Shopify Payments only. If you use a third-party gateway, Shopify adds a transaction fee on top of whatever that gateway charges - between 0.5% and 2% depending on plan - which frequently makes an apparently cheaper processor more expensive overall. That surcharge is deliberately not modelled here because it interacts with your gateway's own pricing.
Also excluded: currency conversion, chargeback fees, Shopify Shipping labels, app subscriptions, and the fees on refunded orders. That last one catches people out. When you refund an order, the percentage is generally returned but the fixed fee is not, so a high-return category pays the flat fee twice on the same sale.
None of these show up as costs in Shopify Analytics, which reports revenue and not what is left of it. That gap between reported revenue and money in the bank is the single most common reason a store's numbers feel wrong.
Questions people ask
Are these rates current?
Every figure comes from Shopify's own regional pricing pages and each country carries the date it was read and the URL it came from. Shopify changes rates without notice, so check your own admin under Settings, Payments before making a decision based on them.
Why is my effective rate higher than the rate Shopify advertises?
Because the advertised rate excludes the fixed per-transaction fee. Your effective rate is always higher, and the lower your average order value, the bigger the gap. A store with a $15 AOV on US Basic pays an effective 4.9%, not 2.9%.
Do international cards really cost more?
Yes, and the gap is material. In the US an international card adds a full percentage point. If a meaningful share of your orders come from abroad, calculate a blended rate rather than assuming the domestic one, or you will understate your costs by several thousand a year.
What about third-party payment gateways?
Shopify charges an additional transaction fee of roughly 0.5% to 2% depending on plan when you do not use Shopify Payments. That is on top of the gateway's own fees, and it is why a processor advertising a lower rate often works out dearer. This calculator models Shopify Payments only.
Does Shopify refund fees when I refund an order?
The percentage portion is generally returned; the fixed per-transaction fee typically is not. For high-return categories this is a real cost that belongs in your margin calculation rather than being discovered at year end.
Does this cover Klarna, Sofort, iDEAL and other local methods?
No, it covers online card payments only. In Europe that distinction matters: in Germany, Klarna costs 2.99% plus 35 cents on every plan while cards are 1.6% to 2.1%, so a Klarna-heavy checkout can pay close to double. If a large share of your orders use one method, enter its rate under the Other option to see the real figure.
